Met an 82 year old farmer in Ireland who showed me a rock he dug up 40 years ago, turns out it was a medieval quern stone
I was walking the fields near Dingle with a local guy named Padraig who farms the same land his family has worked since the 1800s. He pulled a flat round stone out of his shed and said he'd hit it with a plow back in 1984 and just tossed it in a corner for decades because it looked like a plain old rock. I sent photos to a museum in Dublin and they confirmed it was a quern stone, used for grinding grain, probably 700 to 900 years old. He had no idea he'd been kicking a piece of medieval history around his shed for 40 odd years. Now the museum wants to come out and survey the field where he found it. Has anyone else come across finds like this that sat ignored in a barn or shed for years?
