Rant: I don't buy that the Antikythera mechanism was some ancient super computer
I was reading a piece on the Antikythera mechanism last week and the author kept calling it a 2,000 year old laptop, which is just silly. It's 37 bronze gears in a wooden box, built around 150 BC, and it did track the sun, moon, and eclipses, but that's a calendar, not a computer. People want it to be more mysterious than it is. Why does every ancient tool have to be some lost high tech thing instead of just really good bronze work?
