I found a chunk of chert on a gravel bar near Lawrence, Kansas back in April and figured I would knap a point in an afternoon. It took me 11 tries and about 3 months before I got anything that resembled a real arrowhead instead of a shattered rock. The thing that finally worked was slowing way down and reading about platform prep instead of just whacking it with a hammerstone like I saw on a video. I showed it to a guy at the local archaeology society meeting and he said it has decent edge work, which felt like a gold medal after all that. Anyone else have a project that took way more attempts than they expected?
Oh man, three months sounds about right! My first point was supposed to be a quick afternoon thing too and I think I went through a whole bucket of broke rocks before one survived (my garage still has the shrapnel to prove it). Something about slowing down and actually thinking about each hit instead of just smashing is the whole game, and getting that nod from a real archaeologist is huge, congrats!
