That fake Roman coin set me back $120 at a flea market in Rome

I bought a batch of supposedly ancient coins from a stall near Campo de' Fiori, thought I was getting a steal. Got them home and a buddy who studies this stuff laughed for five minutes, turns out they were modern copies with the wrong patina and sloppy lettering. The seller even gave me a certificate of authenticity, which I later found out was printed on a home inkjet. Has anyone else gotten burned by vendor fakes while traveling, and how do you spot them before handing over cash?
