Thought the shards at Vindolanda were junk, then a specialist looked at the edges
I helped sort finds at Vindolanda last summer and kept tossing aside these dull grey bits as nothing, maybe 60 pieces over 3 days. A ceramics person picked one up and pointed out the worn rim, said it was a 2nd century cooking pot, not rubble. I felt like an idiot and now I'm second guessing every bag I labeled. How do you all train your eye for stuff that looks like plain rock?
