Unpopular opinion: I was reading dirt layers totally wrong for 2 years
I used to just eyeball the color changes in a trench wall and call it a new layer. Then a volunteer at a dig near Abilene pointed out that I never once checked the texture with my fingers, just the shade. That's when it clicked that I had been lumping two separate occupation levels together because rain had stained the upper one darker. Since I started doing the finger roll test on every 10 cm, I've caught 3 features I would have flat out missed. Does anyone else have a cheap field habit that sounds dumb but actually works?
