Watching a show about Pompeii and they keep calling the ash layer 'volcanic dust'...

It's not just dust, it's a mix of pumice, rock, and hot gas that fell like rain and hardened... that's why the shapes of people and things were kept so well. How do they get such a basic thing wrong on a big show?

Geology profs hate that, right @averymartin?

But what about the other way around? I bet some profs get secretly annoyed when people use the fancy terms wrong just to sound smart. Like calling every shiny rock quartz or saying something is "igneous" when it's clearly sedimentary. That has to bug them more than just saying dust.
