Working on a site in Tucson, I finally understood why they grid everything out

We were about to pack up when my supervisor pointed at a tiny discoloration in the dirt, which turned out to be a whole new layer of hearth stones. Has anyone else had a find that completely changed the dig plan for the day?

Been there, it's a total gut punch.

Just when you think you're done for the day. Classic archaeology move, right there.

It's just a hole in the ground at the end of a long day. The real work is the paperwork and lab analysis later. Calling it a "classic move" makes it sound more dramatic than it is. Most of the time, you just mark the spot and come back tomorrow with a fresh crew.
