Always thought reusable grocery bags were overhyped until I did the math
I used to grab plastic bags every time at the Kroger in Decatur, figured it was just easier. Then I tallied up the 25 cent refund for bringing my own bags and realized I was throwing away about $6 a month. Anybody else switch for the money instead of the environment?

Angela687 nailed it with the bag dragon comment, that's literally me right now with a trunk full of totes from five different stores. Read somewhere that the average reusable bag gets used maybe 20 times before it ends up in the landfill anyway, so the whole eco-friendly angle is kinda fuzzy when you think about it. That Kroger 25 cent credit adds up faster than people realize, I calculated close to $70 a year just for remembering to bring bags. Guess the real win is feeling like you're sticking it to the system either way.

Oh wow, congrats on figuring out that the environment isn't the only reason to not be a plastic bag chump. I switched for the exact same reason, money talks and the planet listens I guess. Now I'm the person who hoards 47 reusable bags in my car like some kind of bag dragon guarding a worthless treasure. But hey, saving $6 a month for a few minutes of remembering to grab them beats paying for the privilege of throwing away trash. Plus I get to feel smug when the cashier gives me that look of approval, like I just solved world hunger with my canvas tote.
