Hot take: watching my neighbor rake his leaves into 6 bags to save 20 minutes is the dumbest thing I have seen on a Saturday
So I am standing in my driveway on a Saturday in October drinking coffee and my neighbor Dale is out there with 6 of those big paper yard waste bags. He has this leaf blower and he is herding every leaf from the grass onto the street. Then he rakes them into piles. Then he bags them. Took him 4 hours.
I just ran the mower over my leaves with the bag attached and had 2 bags done in 35 minutes. Whole yard. Mulched right in.
He walked over and asked me why I am not blowing them to the curb like the city says. I told him the city says leaves at the curb by Nov 15 or they fine you. That is 3 weeks away. And a bag of mulch on my flower bed is free.
He says yeah but blowing is faster. Faster how? He still raked and bagged afterward.
So am I the crazy one here? Does anybody else just mulch or do you all actually bag by hand? And does your town fine you if you skip the curb pile thing?
Check with your city first, because a lot of towns that threaten fines never actually enforce it as long as your yard looks clean by the deadline. Mulching is the smarter move anyway since it feeds the soil and saves your back, and I have done it for years with no complaints. Just keep the mower blade high and go over the leaves twice so they don't smother the grass.
