Just realized I was cracking eggs on the edge of the bowl my whole life

I always cracked eggs on the rim of the bowl. Every time. Got shell bits in there constantly. My mom does it that way so I just copied her for like 28 years. Then my roommate last month stopped me mid-crack and said 'hit it on the counter instead.' Flat surface. No shell fragments. Less mess. I felt like a complete idiot. Why does everyone act like the bowl edge is the only way? Anyone else get taught some kitchen trick that's actually terrible?

Actually my buddy swears by the counter method and told me this wild story about how his grandma used to crack eggs one handed on the edge of a frying pan and got shell in the scrambled eggs every single Sunday for like 40 years. He said one time he visited her and showed her the flat surface trick and she got so mad she refused to try it for six months before finally admitting it worked better. Now she's the one telling everyone at bingo about it.

Wait, is cracking on the counter really better though? I mean, I've tried it a few times and I always end up getting tiny shell bits from the cracks spreading weird, or worse, I smash the yolk because I hit too hard. Maybe it's just me but cracking on the bowl edge lets me control how much force I'm using since I can see the edge. I feel like the counter method works if you're super precise but for a normal clumsy person like me, the bowl rim is way more forgiving. Plus I just wipe the edge with my finger and grab any stray shell piece, it's not that big of a deal. Idk, maybe I'm just too set in my ways but I'll take the bowl edge over a flat surface any day.
