My backyard compost bin attracted a raccoon family last week

I set up a compost bin in my backyard in Portland about 3 months ago. Last week I went out to turn it and found a mama raccoon and three babies living right next to it. They had dug a tunnel under my fence and made a den in some old leaves I had piled up. I tried shooing them away but they just stared at me like I was the intruder. Anyone else had wildlife decide your garden projects are their new home?

Makes you wonder if we're the ones actually messing with their space more than they mess with ours.

Yeah raccoons are more of a problem on the west coast. They don't really live in the wild like that.
