My dishwasher flooded the kitchen because I ignored a weird noise for 3 months
Last Sunday I woke up to a half inch of water on my linoleum floor. That grinding sound I kept hearing every cycle? Yeah, that was the pump slowly dying. I figured it was just old pipes rattling or something stupid. Cost me $200 in shop vac rentals and a new pump kit to fix it, plus I had to pull up the baseboards to dry them out. My wife gave me the look that said 'I told you so' without saying a word. Anyone else ever ignore a noise until it turned into a disaster?

That grinding noise is almost always the pump bearing getting ready to seize up on you.

Almost always the pump bearing" - I dunno man, I've seen plenty of times where it's just a piece of debris rattling around or a loose belt. I'd check the simple stuff first before tearing into the pump.

Oh man, that's rough. Honestly I just read an article that said something like 40% of appliance repairs come from people ignoring those early warning signs. @mitchell.lee is right, that grinding noise is basically the pump begging for help before it locks up completely. I had a similar thing with my dryer where I ignored a squeaking belt for too long and ended up having to replace the whole drum assembly.
