My kitchen sink sprayer hose just burst open while I was doing dishes
It happened two days ago, right after dinner. I was rinsing a pot and suddenly there was water spraying everywhere under the sink. The plastic collar on the hose where it connects to the sprayer head just cracked and split. I had to shut off the water at the valves under the sink, which were pretty stiff and took some effort. The whole cabinet floor was soaked, and I spent an hour mopping up with old towels. I looked at the hose and it was clearly old and brittle. I went to the hardware store yesterday and got a new universal replacement kit for about $25. Installing it was straightforward, but I had to be careful not to overtighten the new connections. Has anyone had this happen, and is there a way to tell when these hoses are getting ready to fail before they make a mess?

Ever check the hose for stiffness?

Stiff hoses remind me of my grandpa's old garden, which always had the weirdest kinks in the lines.

Actually, stiff hoses are way better than the floppy ones. They hold their shape and you can direct the water exactly where you want it. A soft hose just flops around and gets tangled up every time you try to move it. Sure, you have to wrestle a stiff one a bit at first, but it stays put once you bend it. The kinks in your grandpa's hose probably just meant it was a quality one that lasted years. I'd take a reliable stiff hose over a messy, weak one any day.
