My kitchen window herb box went from sad to full in just under a month

I've always killed herbs, but this time I tried something different. I got a cheap plastic window box from the garden center, drilled a bunch more holes in the bottom, and used a bag of potting mix made for veggies. I planted basil, parsley, and thyme from tiny starter plants about four weeks ago. The big change was I put it on a strict schedule, watering it a little bit every single morning with a small cup of water, no more, no less. I also moved it to a spot that gets the afternoon sun. Now the basil is huge and I'm actually using it for cooking. What other herbs are tough to mess up for a beginner like me?

I always thought rosemary needed fancy care, but mine thrives on the same neglect as my thyme. It just needs that good drainage you set up and full sun. Chives are another one that's basically foolproof once they get going.

Oh man, that's so true. My rosemary is the only plant I haven't killed yet, which is saying something lol. I totally overthought it at first, babying it with special plant food and everything. Turns out ignoring it is the real trick, just like @grantp28 said about mint going wild. My chives are the same, they came back this spring like nothing happened even after I forgot to water them for weeks. It's the high-maintenance ones that always get me.

My basil always dies when I fuss over it (maybe I should try @grantp28's mint trick with it). It's like the plants know when you're trying too hard.

Try mint, but keep it in its own pot.
