My neighbor told me I was washing my dishes wrong

She saw me scrubbing a cast iron pan with soap and nearly had a heart attack. Now I just use salt and a stiff brush, and my eggs don't stick anymore. Anyone else grow up doing it the wrong way?

My aunt once yelled at me for putting my nonstick pans in the dishwasher, then handed me a sponge and told me to hand wash everything from now on. Turns out she was right about that one. Now I just use warm water and a soft cloth, and my pans actually last more than a few months.

That aunt knew what she was talking about lol. The nonstick coating is way more fragile than people realize. Did you actually notice a difference in how long your pans lasted after you switched to hand washing? I'm asking because I still see people throwing nonstick stuff in the dishwasher all the time and they swear it's fine. My guess is they just don't pay attention to the peeling or scratching until it's way too late. Once that coating starts flaking off into your food, it's basically game over for the pan anyway.

Yo you mentioned "basically game over for the pan" and that's actually the part that gets me. Like how do people not notice the flakes in their food lmao. I had a roommate who swore her nonstick was fine but when I looked close there were these tiny black specks all over the eggs. She said it was just burnt seasoning. I was like girl that's Teflon. Do you think most people are just willfully ignoring the damage or do they genuinely not see it until it's super obvious? Because I feel like once you know what to look for you can't unsee it.
