My neighbor's compost bin advice finally clicked after 4 smelly months

Back in March, my neighbor Carol kept telling me to add more browns, like leaves and cardboard, to my compost. I figured she was just being picky and tossed in all my kitchen scraps, which turned into a soggy, stinking mess by June. Last week I finally tried her ratio, about 2 parts brown to 1 part green, and the pile stopped smelling within 3 days. Turns out the heat also went up, which means it's actually breaking down now. Why do I trust random forum posts over the person right next door? Has anyone else had a neighbor's simple tip that took forever to try?
