My washing machine died mid-cycle yesterday and flooded the basement
My 8 year old Whirlpool just stopped spinning with a full load of clothes and water everywhere. Took me 45 minutes to mop it all up and find the shutoff valve. Called a repair guy who says the control board is shot and it'll cost $350 to fix. Is it worth fixing an older machine like this or should I just buy new?

the_holly's right that $350 is pretty close to what a basic new machine costs these days. I've been there with the basement flood and it's just the worst to deal with. For an 8 year old Whirlpool I'd probably put that money toward a new one instead.

...and that's exactly why I just spent my whole day off googling how to hand-wash jeans in the bathtub while my cat watched me from the toilet like I was losing my mind. Honestly, at that price point you're halfway to a new basic machine, I'd ditch it.

No joke, same thing happened to my Samsung about two years ago. Water everywhere, had to pull up a corner of the laminate floor because it started buckling. Repair guy told me it was a $400 board and I did the math right there. I ended up buying a new Maytag for like $450 on sale and it's been running fine since. The old one just wasn't worth dumping that much cash into when the new warranties are pretty decent these days. Plus you never know what else is gonna fail next on an 8 year old machine. Did you check if your homeowners insurance covers any of the flood damage?
