Blind trust in a forum post cost me my whole tomato crop

Some user on a gardening thread swore by coffee grounds as fertilizer, said it was a miracle fix. I dumped two big buckets around my plants in early July and within a week the leaves started curling. Turns out the acidity threw off my soil pH hard, and now my tomatoes are stunted and splitting. Has anyone else followed advice from a random stranger online and ended up regretting it worse than if you'd just ignored them?

Man, coffee grounds as a miracle fix sounds like something my uncle would swear by after one good year. Of course the internet turned it into gospel and your soil paid the price. That pH swing will mess up tomatoes fast, two buckets is a lot to dump in one go. Next time brew the coffee, drink it, and keep the grounds in the compost bin where they belong.

My neighbor Dale told me for two years straight that eggshells and vinegar would fix his blossom end rot, and I nodded along because it sounded so simple. Then last summer I watched him lose about fifteen plants to the same rot while my soil test kit sat unused in the garage. I finally ran the test and found my pH was already at 7.1, so all that lime I'd been adding was making things worse. Now I test first and add nothing until I know what's actually missing. It took losing half a row of Romas to change my mind about free advice.
