Blind trust in a forum post cost me my whole tomato crop

Some user on a gardening thread swore by coffee grounds as fertilizer, said it was a miracle fix. I dumped two big buckets around my plants in early July and within a week the leaves started curling. Turns out the acidity threw off my soil pH hard, and now my tomatoes are stunted and splitting. Has anyone else followed advice from a random stranger online and ended up regretting it worse than if you'd just ignored them?
