Pro tip: That cheap digital caliper from the hardware store cost me 30 bucks on a ruined cabinet hinge

I bought a $8 caliper online and misread the measurement by 0.5mm, then spent a whole afternoon recutting a $30 piece of oak for a cabinet door, has anyone else had bad luck with budget measuring tools?

Oh man I ruined a whole shelf with a $10 caliper once, felt like such a tool.

Half a millimeter can absolutely mess something up depending on what you're building. Woodworking tolerances are a lot tighter than people think once you start mating pieces together. The worst part is you finish the whole shelf, step back to admire it, and then notice that one joint is slightly off. Then you spend the next two hours trying to convince yourself it's fine before you just have to scrap it or live with the shame. There's no coming back from that feeling when every time you look at it, you know exactly where the mistake is.
