Shoutout to asking a plumber about my water bill instead of guessing

I was staring at a $340 water bill for my house in Phoenix and thought I had a leak somewhere. My neighbor told me to just ask his plumber buddy during a BBQ instead of buying leak detectors online. Turns out my toilet flapper was busted and letting water run 24/7. Has anyone else fixed a huge bill with a cheap part and a quick question?

Yup, toilet flappers are the sneaky ones. Saved me $100 easy.

You're not wrong about flappers being a common culprit, but I actually see it differently. A lot of times the issue isn't the flapper itself, it's the fill valve or the chain length causing the flapper to not seal right.

Oh man that exact same thing got me last summer! I was ready to call a leak detection company and drop like 500 bucks until my dad came over and wiggled the handle on my toilet and heard water running. A five dollar flapper from Home Depot fixed it and my bill dropped by almost 200 the next month. Its wild how something so small can waste so much water without you even hearing it. I still check all my toilets every few months now out of paranoia.
