Showerthought: most people think hiccups come from your diaphragm, but my doctor in Boise said it's the vagus nerve
I asked him about it after my 4th round of hiccups in one week and he showed me a chart, the diaphragm just goes along for the ride. Anyone else ever get told something in a 10 minute checkup that made them rethink basic body stuff?
The vagus nerve is part of the reflex arc for sure, but saying the diaphragm just goes along for the ride is a bit of a stretch. That muscle is the one doing the actual jerking that makes the sound, so it's kind of the main event even if the nerve starts the chain. Your doc wasn't wrong about the nerve being involved, it's just that "involved" and "it's all the nerve" are two different things. Ten minute checkups are great for dropping half truths that stick in your head for years.
