Showerthought: That $30 radio I bought on a whim actually works better than the fancy one

I picked up a cheap no-name AM/FM radio at a flea market in Tucson last month just for the novelty, expecting it to crap out in a week. Three weeks later, it's pulling in stations from two states away while my expensive Sony sits silent. Anyone else have a random cheap item that just outperformed the premium stuff for no reason?

Two states away? That's insane for a $30 radio.

Wait, is that for real? Two states away on a $30 radio sounds almost unreal. @jake638's buddy nailed it though, those simple circuits really pull in stuff way better than the fancier models.

That cheap radio probably uses a simpler circuit design with less interference from extra features. Fancy radios cram in bluetooth, digital displays, and noise canceling stuff that can actually mess with the raw signal. My buddy's an old ham radio guy and he swears by those basic transistor radios for long range reception. All those premium features create electrical noise inside the case that blocks weak signals. The cheap ones just do one thing and do it right. Sometimes less really is more with electronics.
