That guy who told me to ignore my gut on a car deal cost me $1,200
Bought a used Honda Civic from a lot in Austin last summer. Salesman said the transmission fluid was fine and I didn't need a mechanic to check it. I had a weird feeling but went with his advice anyway. Thing blew a seal on the highway 2 months later and the repair bill came to $1,200. Anyone else ever get burned by trusting a car salesman too much?

My buddy swore by bringing his own mechanic, saved me from a lemon once.

...and honestly that mechanic thing is smart but it can backfire too. I knew a guy who brought his own guy to look at a truck and the mechanic was friends with the seller so he just gave it a thumbs up without looking close. @jessica_robinson23 you got lucky having a buddy who knew his stuff but half the time people bring in someone who just nods along. If you're gonna do that at least make sure it's someone who'll actually be honest about problems. Otherwise you're paying for peace of mind that's fake.

Yeah but @jessica_robinson23, having a buddy who actually knows what to look for vs some rando you found on Craigslist is totally different. Half the people who bring a "mechanic" just grab their uncle who changed oil once. You gotta vet the person doing the vetting, that's the real trick.
