The 5 dollar GPS collar I laughed at actually found my dog

I used to think those cheap tracker collars were complete junk, especially after my buddy's fell off in a lake last summer. But last Sunday my elderly beagle bolted after a rabbit into the woods behind my house in Fort Collins, and I figured I'd never see her again. That little plastic collar, which I'd tossed in a drawer for a year, pinged her location within 8 minutes, sitting under a fallen log about half a mile out. I still don't trust the brand for anything fancy, but has anyone else had a budget gadget prove them totally wrong at the worst possible moment?
