Warning: My last-minute decision to skip the pre-flight checklist on my Cessna 172 cost me $800

I was at a small airstrip outside Amarillo last Saturday, figured I'd save 10 minutes and just fire it up without checking the oil. Got three miles out and the engine started sputtering, had to turn back and land on a dirt strip. Has anyone else wrecked their wallet by rushing through a pre-flight?

@stellaa69 not everyone treats pre-flight as optional but that $800 lesson was pretty cheap compared to some engine failures I've seen.

So you really think skipping the checklist is worth it just to save ten minutes? I get that it feels like a hassle sometimes, but that lousy $800 repair bill should be a pretty loud wake-up call. Nobody plans for an engine to sputter, but that's exactly why we do the boring stuff first. Maybe next time you'll think twice before rushing out of the gate.

Did you catch any warning signs before it actually failed?
