Drove 90 minutes to a dark sky site in February with my phone camera, got better shots than my DSLR setup that cost $800
I finally tested this last weekend at a spot outside Terlingua, Texas, where the skies are supposed to be super dark. My old DSLR with a tripod and all the extra gear gave me these dim, noisy blobs of the Orion Nebula, but my phone on night mode with a cheap $20 tripod clamp actually showed the nebula's shape and some color. I think the phone's built in stacking just handles light pollution and tracking way better than me fiddling with settings for 20 minutes in the cold. The weird part is my DSLR shots looked sharper in the camera screen but turned into mush on my laptop. Has anyone else gotten surprisingly good results from a phone and terrible ones from a real camera, or am I just terrible at focusing?
