Found out the Ring Nebula is only about 2,500 light years away and I'd been telling people it was way farther
I was reading through an old Sky and Telescope issue from March and hit the distance figure for M57 in the caption. I'd been saying 4,000 light years for years, just repeating it without checking. Pulled out my own notes from a session last summer and sure enough, I'd written the wrong number twice. Now I'm wondering how many other facts I've been passing along without looking them up again. Does anyone here keep a running list of stuff they got wrong and had to fix?
