Frustrated by how late-night astrophotography messes up my next day

Last night, I was out until 4 AM capturing the Orion Nebula. Today, I feel like a zombie and barely got through my tasks. My partner says I need to cut back, but I don't want to miss these moments. Any tips for managing sleep with this hobby?

My friend Dan did that once and literally fell asleep at a red light. Totally get what @stellachen means about the zombie thing, it's real. He had to switch to only shooting when he had zero plans the next day.

Are you forcing yourself out on weeknights or saving it for weekends? I totally crashed after my first few all nighters until I made a rule to only do late shoots on Friday or Saturday. Try a strong coffee right when you get home so you can at least function for a few morning hours. A dark eye mask and white noise machine let me grab a solid nap after I process my shots. Honestly, missing one perfect night is better than being a zombie for three days straight. You gotta treat it like a fun job with dumb hours, not a free for all.

Honestly, that 'zombie for three days' line is so true. I tried pushing through weeknights last month and it wrecked my sleep for days. Tbh, I've started setting a hard cutoff time even on weekends, or I'll pay for it. Ngl, treating it like a job with weird hours is the only way to not burn out. You really have to listen to your body and sometimes just call it a night.

Nah, sometimes that zombie feeling @sarah_fox33 mentioned is worth it if you catch something unreal... I'd rather be tired for days than miss a shot nobody else got.
