Had to pick between a $500 scope and a $200 one for my kid's birthday

Picked the cheaper Celestron. Figured he'd lose interest anyway. Three months later he's out there every clear night tracking Jupiter. Now I'm the one wishing I spent more.

Funny enough I just read a post about cheap scopes actually making kids stick with astronomy longer lol

oh come on, is it really that deep? like yeah a cheap telescope has worse glass but it's not like they're gonna give up on the stars because they saw a blurry Jupiter for a minute. if anything it's the opposite, they get excited about finding anything at all and then want a better one. my nephew got one of those 50 dollar things from target and he's still out there every clear night trying to spot satellites. i think the gatekeeping around gear is way more likely to scare kids off than a wobbly tripod ever could.
