I finally had someone explain why my Moon shots looked flat

At a star party in Ohio last fall, an old guy with a beat-up telescope told me to stop boosting contrast in post-processing and instead actually shoot at the right phase for detail. He was right - my full moon photos were just bright discs, but he showed me how the terminator line brings out texture. Anyone else had someone call them out on bad technique like that?

Did you try shooting during a crescent phase instead?

Funny you mention that. For me, full moon shoots were always way too bright and washed everything out. I switched to the waning gibbous phase and it was like night and day. The shadows were deeper but the light still had this soft glow. Really helped get those detail shots that were always getting blown out before. Took a few tries to get the exposure right though. Worth experimenting with different moon phases for sure.
