I used to think you needed a super expensive camera for deep sky photos

For years I avoided trying because I only had my old Canon T3i and figured it was useless. Then I saw a post from someone in my local astronomy club who got a great shot of the Orion Nebula with the exact same model. The key was stacking over 200 light frames with free software like DeepSkyStacker. It completely changed my results. Now I know the mount and processing matter way more than the camera body for a lot of targets. Has anyone else had a similar surprise with gear they already owned?

Wait, you got a good Orion shot with a T3i? That thing is ancient. I remember trying with mine years ago and the noise was so bad I gave up. You really stacked 200 frames and it worked? I guess I just never had the patience to let DeepSkyStacker run that long. Makes me wonder what else my old gear can actually do if I just put in the time.

But what about the noise from that old sensor? Stacking can't fix everything.

That old sensor noise is a real pain, right?
