Just hit 500 hours of total exposure time on my M81 image, which felt like a huge win, but my friend says chasing that number is missing the point of the hobby.

I'm torn because reaching that milestone after 8 months felt like a real achievement for my patience and gear, but he argues the photo's artistic value matters more than any technical stat, so what's more important, the dedication the number represents or the final picture itself?

Oh wow, I'm totally with your friend on this one! That 500 hours is just a number, and honestly, obsessing over it can suck the fun right out. The real win is making a beautiful image that makes you stop and stare, not a spreadsheet of exposure time. If a stunning picture takes 50 hours, that's way better than a boring one that took 500.

Wait, you think 50 hours is short?

Your friend's right, but that 500-hour number is YOUR proof of insane dedication.

Hold up, so is the real goal just to make a cool picture, or is it about proving you worked harder than everyone else? If you get a shot you love in one night, why does it matter if someone else spent a month on theirs? Are we making art or collecting badges for suffering?
