Pro tip: stop chasing the Milky Way shots everyone posts on Instagram
I know this goes against what most people here like, but I think those big wide field Milky Way shots with the same rock arch or lake in the foreground are overdone and honestly kind of boring. Three weeks ago I skipped the new moon trip to Joshua Tree that four friends kept pushing me to join, and instead I spent two clear nights in my own driveway in Tucson shooting the Andromeda galaxy with a 135mm lens I got used for $160. My first stack of 240 subs came out muddy, and I nearly gave up, but on the third night I got 4 hours of clean data and when the final picture showed those two dust lanes curving in, I actually said wow out loud at my laptop. That little smudge of light left Earth 2.5 million years ago, and my neighbors had no clue it was sitting right over their roof while they watched TV. I get why people chase the flashy wide shots, but those pictures all start to look the same to me after a while. Does anyone else here shoot the quieter stuff, and if so what target finally made you skip the usual Milky Way trip?
Been there with the driveway shooting and it honestly beats fighting a crowd at a trailhead any night. My turning point was the Orion Nebula from my back patio with a cheap 50mm and a star tracker I built out of plywood scraps. First few tries were trash, but once I got a couple hours of good frames and saw those little folds of gas show up, I was hooked for good. Those wide arch shots are pretty, sure, but after you see a hundred of them they all blur together. Quiet targets make you actually work for it and the payoff feels like yours.
