Stacking my telescope wrong for 8 years until a stranger at Cherry Springs spoke up

I used to tighten the legs of my tripod all the way down every single time, thinking stiffer meant steadier. Then this older guy at Cherry Springs State Park walked over during a setup and told me the vibration actually gets worse that way, you leave a little flex in the legs to soak it up. He had me loosen each leg about a quarter turn and tap the tube, and the jitter in my eyepiece view dropped by like half instantly. How do you guys handle tripod tension, do you keep it snug or let it breathe a bit?
