That guy at the camera shop told me to use a tripod for astro shots, I thought he was crazy

I was shooting the Milky Way handheld at f/1.8 like a dummy and wondering why everything was blurry. He set me up with a cheap used tripod for $40 and my 30 second exposures actually came out sharp. Has anyone else had a shop employee save them from bad habits?

That tripod tip was a game changer for me too. I had the same problem with blurry stars until someone at my local shop pointed out that even steady hands shake over a long exposure. I picked up a basic aluminum tripod for around $30 and it made a world of difference for my night shots. Now I keep that tripod in my car so I never forget it when I see a good sky.

Oh man, that's exactly what happened to me too! @christopherwilson, the tripod thing is such a simple fix but it feels like a secret handshake once you figure it out. I used to crank the ISO sky high to get any kind of star shot, but with a tripod I can leave it at 800 or 1600 and the image is way cleaner. That shop employee probably saved me from three years of bad photos honestly.

I read somewhere that some astrophoto people actually use a "staircase" technique where they take multiple shorter exposures and stack them instead of doing one super long shot. Helps avoid heat noise from the sensor too.
