Tried to photograph the Milky Way last night, ended up with 47 blurry shots of my own thumb

Was out in the desert near Moab, set up my tripod on what I thought was solid ground, but turns out it was a patch of loose sand. My camera kept sinking and every shot came out looking like a drunk spider web. Anybody else accidentally document their own incompetence instead of the stars?

Drunk spider web" is a great description. Sand isn't loose ground so much as a fluid, honestly.

Moab sounds amazing but my thumb has photobombed more night skies than I care to admit, usually because I forget to take the lens cap off first.
