Just realized I was way too aggressive pruning my azaleas

A guy at Pike Nursery told me I was cutting back 6 inches too much each spring, and after trying his lighter trim last year I got twice the blooms. Has anyone else been told they're going too far with their pruning?

I did the same thing with my hydrangeas for years before someone told me to stop being so aggressive. Light pruning made a huge difference for me too, way more flowers and the plants just look healthier overall.

Whoa wait, pruning too aggressively actually hurts them? I always figured more cutting meant more growth but I guess I've been chopping off all the flower buds this whole time.

Think about the timing too, cutting them right before winter can seriously mess up their growth cycle.
