My brakes started grinding on the way down 400 near the North Springs exit and I'm still debating what I should've done

Happened Tuesday night around 8, heading home toward Sandy Springs, and I heard that metal-on-metal grind at like 45 mph. I limped it to the first shop on Roswell Road that was still open and paid $310 for pads and rotors same night, but a buddy says I got fleeced and should've just parked it and waited. So which is it: eat the cost at a random shop when you're stranded, or wait and risk the drive home? Curious what the rest of you actually do when this hits, because I'm still not sure I picked right.
