My water heater gave up on a Sunday morning

Woke up last Sunday to ice cold water and a puddle in the basement. The pilot light was out and the burner wouldn't relight no matter what I did. Called a plumber Monday morning who said the whole unit was 14 years old and corroded inside. Had to drop $1,600 on a new one that day. Anyone had to replace theirs in a rush and find a good deal somewhere?

My buddy always swore by keeping his appliances running until they died, and I used to think that was smart too... until my water heater gave out on a Christmas morning a few years back. That $1,600 hit right before the holidays really changed my mind about being proactive. Now I check the anode rod every year and flush the tank twice a year, stuff I never bothered with before. It is way easier to spend $50 on maintenance than $1,600 on a panic call.

Honestly, I get it, but for me the math works out better just rolling the dice and paying up when stuff breaks.
