Overheard a landlord at the coffee shop bragging about ignoring mold
I was grabbing a latte near Piedmont Park yesterday and a guy in a suit was on the phone saying he just paints over black mold in his rental units and tenants never notice. Made me rethink ever renting without a moisture meter check first. Anyone else start asking about past water damage after a story like that?

Did you ask them about their maintenance history before signing the lease? I started doing that after a friend found black mold behind a fake wall in their apartment. I also check for fresh paint in bathrooms and near windows where moisture collects. Those habits have saved me from a couple of sketchy places.

Black mold behind a fake wall" - wait, a FAKE wall? That's wild. I've heard of landlords hiding stuff but that's next level sketchy. Like, did they build a whole wall just to cover up the mold? That's terrifying honestly, I can't believe people actually do that. I'm gonna be looking at every wall in my apartment a little different now, haha. Your tip about checking fresh paint by windows is genius though, I never thought of that.

People freak out too much about mold. It's not always poison.
