Question about finding a mechanic who actually explains things
I was talking to my neighbor the other day while we were both out watering plants. He's this older guy who's been in Atlanta since the 80s. He told me he stopped going to chain auto shops years ago because they always tried to upsell him on stuff he didn't need. Said he found a small shop off Moreland Avenue where the owner will literally show you the worn part on your car and tell you if it can wait another month. That conversation got me thinking because I just moved here from out of state and I've been taking my Honda to a big name place near my apartment. Last time they wanted $600 for something I don't even remember. Has anyone found a shop around here where the mechanic actually takes time to talk through what's going on? I'd rather pay a little more upfront and know what I'm getting into.

Paid a little more upfront" won't work if they still sell you parts you don't need.

I read somewhere that some smaller shops actually document everything on video now, like they'll record the inspection and send you a link so you can see exactly what they're talking about. That neighbor you mentioned sounds like he knows what he's talking about though, older mechanics usually have that mentality of teaching while they work. My cousin had a similar deal with a guy in Decatur who ran his shop out of an old gas station, he said the mechanic would let him hang around and watch. Why don't more places just do that instead of handing you a piece of paper with big numbers on it?
