TIL my neighbor's lawn guy charges $40 a cut and I've been paying $60

I was walking my dog last Saturday and ran into my neighbor Tom while he was out front. He mentioned his guy charges him $40 for a standard mow and edge job, same size yard as mine. I've been paying this other company $60 every two weeks for over a year now. Called my neighbor's guy this morning and he's coming Thursday to give me a quote. Has anyone else found big price differences just by talking to neighbors?

$20 difference if that ends up being worth the hassle of switching to a new guy who might flake or do a worse job, honestly not losing sleep over $40 every two weeks.

Blink twice if you just realized you're paying $40 extra every two weeks for nothing. That's like $80 a month or almost a grand a year for basically zero extra value. I don't get how anyone can just shrug off that kind of money. Even if the new guy messes up once or twice, you could still come out ahead after a few months. And honestly, if a guy flakes on a regular schedule, that's a pretty bad sign about his work anyway. You're basically paying for the privilege of not having to deal with a minor inconvenience.

Okay so you really got me thinking here. I used to be totally on the "it's just $40 whatever" side, honestly never even added it up like that. But seeing it written out as almost a grand a year makes me feel kinda stupid for not noticing before. That's like a nice weekend trip or a new phone or something, not nothing. And you're right about the flaking thing, if a guy can't show up on time why would I trust him to do a good job anyway. I guess I was just being lazy and not wanting to find someone new, but thinking about it now I'd rather spend the time finding someone reliable than burning that much cash for no reason.
