Tried to fix a leaky faucet with a $5 part from Ace Hardware and flooded my kitchen instead

I watched a YouTube video on replacing a 50 cent washer in my bathroom sink. Hoped it would work on the kitchen one too. I twisted the wrong valve under the sink and water shot straight up like a fountain for ten seconds before I got it off. My wife asked me if I was trying to water the ceiling. Has anyone else had a simple plumbing job turn into a disaster like this?

Did you at least check if it was the hot or cold valve before you started twisting?

Did you hear about that guy who flooded his whole apartment building trying to fix a toilet? I read about it on some DIY forum. He pulled the wrong pipe and water just kept coming for like 20 minutes. My faucet mishap was small compared to that. Now I always double check which valve is hot and cold before I touch anything. Plus I keep a towel and a bucket right there just in case. Basically learned my lesson the hard way...
