A 30 year master tech told me my diag process was backwards and I've been stewing on it all weekend
Stopped by my old shop in Sacramento on Saturday to grab some stuff I left behind and ended up talking to Ray, who's been turning wrenches for 30 years and is basically the guy everybody brings the weird electrical stuff to. He asked how I'd tracked down a no start on a 2011 Malibu and I told him I chased the wiring harness first because the codes pointed that way. He just shook his head and told me I was doing the hard part before the easy part, that he always checks grounds and loads the battery before he trusts a single code. Said he's seen more bad grounds sell more parts than any diagnostic tool ever will. That one hit me because I've replaced two ECMs in the last 6 months and neither one fixed the problem. I pulled the ground strap on my own truck when I got home and it was green and crusty under the bolt. Never even thought to look there because the scanner was screaming at me about something else. Anybody else got a mentor who flipped the order of how you work and it stuck with you?
