Every third DIYer on this forum forgets to check the ground strap first

Spent 45 minutes chasing a no-start on a 2012 F-150 today, swapped a brand new starter and everything, only to find the ground strap was corroded to nothing under the frame, so why do people always jump to the expensive parts before looking at the $8 cable, and has anyone else got a story like that?

You mentioned swapping a brand new starter first, so was the old one actually bad or did you just assume it was toast without testing it?

Blame everything but the battery first, classic move we ALL do.

Funny you mention testing things, @jade_johnson because I once spent a whole weekend swapping out a fuel pump on my old truck, turned out the real issue was a fuse that cost like four bucks. The old pump probably still works fine, sitting in a box in my garage next to a perfectly good alternator I replaced for no reason. My buddy still gives me grief about it, says I diagnose with my wallet instead of a multimeter. But hey, at least the new parts look shiny under the hood, right?
