Had a 15 minute chat with a diesel mechanic at lunch that reset my brain on specialty tools

Ngl, I always thought buying the cheap version of a tool was fine until he showed me his $600 Snap-On scanner vs my $80 Amazon one on a 2020 Ford. The difference in data readout was honestly night and day, I couldn't argue with what I saw on screen. Has anyone else had a moment where spending more on one tool actually saved you time on the job?

Yeah but the real trick is knowing which $600 jobs actually pay for themselves.

Used to think a $600 job was always a steal but I learned that lesson the hard way.

OH man, that is TOO real. I swear some of those "deals" end up costing you triple in the long run once you factor in the frustration and fixing their mistakes. It's like paying for the pleasure of having a headache for a week. But then sometimes you get that one guy who does incredible work for pocket change and you feel like you won the lottery. It's really just a complete crap shoot. You never know if you're getting a genius or a guy who watched a YouTube video last night.
