Had a timing belt jump a tooth on a 2.4L yesterday

I did the tensioner and water pump, but didn't double-check the crank pulley bolt torque. That thing backed off at 3,000 rpm and wiped out six valves. Has anyone else had a brand new tensioner fail to hold?

Just reading "didn't double check the crank pulley bolt torque" and I felt that in my gut. It's funny how the little things you rush through are the ones that come back to bite you, isn't it? It's like forgetting to lock the back door and coming home to find the whole house ransacked.

Buddy of mine bought a used Civic, put in a new timing belt and water pump. Skipped torquing the crank bolt because "it felt tight enough." Thing let go at 70 mph on the interstate two weeks later. By the time he got it stopped the pistons had kissed the valves and the block was cracked.

Nah, I gotta respectfully disagree with @wendyk56 on this one. Torquing a crank bolt isn't "rushing through a little thing," it's skipping a basic safety step that any backyard mechanic knows can total your engine.
