I finally figured out why those oil filters were always leaking
I've been fighting with leaky oil filters on customer cars for months, especially on those late-2000s Fords. Turns out I was tightening them with a wrench (you know, like the old guys taught me) when Ford actually specs a specific torque of 18 ft-lbs for that filter. Anyone else had a similar issue with over-tightening causing the gasket to warp?

Those old guys taught me" got me too. Had a Chevy that kept leaking until I backed off and actually torqued it right.

Torque specs are usually for dry threads, not oiled ones.

That torque wrench really is the secret weapon. Did you have to re-train your hand not to just crank on it by feel?
