Old guy told me to index spark plugs by hand, and he was dead right
Had a 2011 Silverado with a rough idle in my bay at the shop in Tulsa last week, and a retired mechanic named Ray who hangs around said to index the spark plugs instead of just torquing them in. I figured that was old timer stuff and did it anyway since he would not drop it, and the idle smoothness improved right away on the test drive. I checked the ground straps on each plug so the gap faced the intake valve like he said, took me maybe 15 extra minutes. Now I am second guessing every plug job I have ever rushed through. Has anyone else tried this on a modern engine, or does it only pay off on the older small blocks?
